F for Frodo and Falcor

Monday, August 20th, 2012

After a long wait, finally featuring F!

Someone suggested I drew Fezzik, and the thought of Frodo trying to fight the Giant had a certain charm, but eventually the fluffy luck dragon won. Falcor is drawn part from memory and part from reference, after I tried drawing “a dragon that looks like a dog” and came up with some sort of Simba-Stitch hybrid, and decided to maybe check how he actually looks.

As usual, drawn on an iPad with the Procreate app and a Wacom stylus, with a subtle texture layer in Photoshop.

D for Death and Dolf

Thursday, July 26th, 2012

There are some great characters in D: Denver the Last Dinosaur (which is apparently one of these), various doctors (that I only considered if they were actually called “Doctor” or if their real name began with D), Don Draper, Draco Malfoy, D’artagnan, Daredevil, Daniel Jackson, Darwin, Dorothy…and then I realized I could draw all of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman’s main characters. I’m not a huge fan of it however – angry comments after the beep please – and as cute as Gaiman’s Death is, there’s one I like much better.

And Dolf? Dolf is Justice.

C for Cyclops and Chikorita

Thursday, July 19th, 2012

Used a different technique again: Laying color straight on top of the initial sketch. This kind of experimentation is the reason for these weekly challenges (and working on an iPad) for me, because when I start a “serious” piece, whether personal or for a client, chances are I’ll stick to my usual methods and won’t waste time on experiments.

B for Buffy and Batman

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

Second in the series! B for Buffy and Batman; you can’t really blame her for going at him – he’s a mysterious man in a black cape, who lives alone in a castle and is associated with bats. This one also drawn on an iPad, with some texture and color adjustments in Photoshop.

A for Abe and April

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012

A few months ago I did a weekly illustration project in my Hebrew blog, where I drew scenes made up of elements starting with each letter of the Hebrew alphabet (you can see all of them on my Facebook page). Now I find myself in need of a new project, because I don’t seem to be able to draw anything not work-related outside of a structured challenge.

This time the inspiration came from a blog I found accidentally through a friend’s “Like”: Alphabooks. It started in May, and each week artists upload illustrations of book characters beginning with that week’s letter. Unfortunately I don’t read enough to limit myself to literary characters, so anything goes: movies, TV, books; even iconic historical figures, as demonstrated in the first piece: A for Abe and April.

Oh, and another part of the challenge is drawing them on an iPad, both to get some practice and to get away from the PC now and then. For you artistic tablet owners out there, I strongly recommend an app called “Procreate“; it costs $4.99, and is worth every penny.

Until next time,
Aviv
